Briefly, Endometriosis is a common and painful disorder of the female reproductive system. The cause of endometriosis remains medically unknown. The endometrium, which lines the inside of the uterus, becomes implanted outside the uterus, usually the fallopian tubes, ovaries, back of the womb and it may grow on the bladder, appendix, abdominal wall and even the upper abdomen.

These abnormal tissues that have attached to these outside areas bleed every month during menses.  The surrounding areas become inflamed and form scars which pull on the nerve endings and cause severe pain. Endometrial implants look like cysts of dark blood which are called “chocolate cysts” which can manifest on the ovary, and these cysts can form scar tissue and adhesions – causing even more pain during periods or even other times of the month. Scars and adhesions affect fertility.

Conventional medical approach towards endometriosis is painkillers for pain management and hormonal drugs – which regulate the period cycle or stop periods altogether, hoping that the abnormal tissues will shrink with the pause in periods. As a last resort, surgery either laparoscopy or in the worst case scenario a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is performed. Natural medicine has a lot more options:

  • Herbs- to tone the uterus and regulate hormones,
  • Supplements- for nutrient deficiency and pain management
  • Homeopathy – for constitutional remedy
  • Diet and lifestyle changes to reduce or manage pain and improve quality of life. It is important to have an anti-inflammatory diet
  • Aromatherapy oils which have hormonal effects
Each patient’s treatment will differ depending on their unique situation and complaints.
