Pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a group of physical and psychological symptoms which occur 2-14 days prior to menses and may continue through the menses or disappear a few hours after the onset of menstrual flow.
A majority of women have some signs and symptoms that naturopaths consider an oestrogen dominant condition.
Some common symptoms experienced can be mood swings, becoming short tempered, breast tenderness, pain, anxiety, food cravings, depression, altered bowel activity or headaches and migraines.
Natural medicine’s approach again would be first identifying the causes and then supporting hormonal balance via herbs, supplements, remedies and very importantly diet and lifestyle changes as well as stress management.
:
- Menorrhagia (Excessive bleeding)
- Amenorrhoea (absence of periods)
- Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods)
They are all symptoms of underlying pathological or physiological changes. For example:
- Fibroids is one potential cause of menorrhagia
- PCOS or being under weight both can cause amenorrhoea
- Endometriosis can cause severe dysmenorrhoea
All of these can be managed via natural medicine , diet, lifestyle changes.
